2007 MDA Consumer
Food Safety Education Mini-Grants
Michigan State University has once again made available with financial
support from the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA), the Consumer
Food Safety Education Mini-Grants. The 2007 mini-grant program represents
part of a consumer food safety education grant awarded by MDA to MSU.
The participating MSU units include the Department of Food Science and
Human Nutrition (FSHN), National Food Safety and Toxicology Center (NFSTC)
and MSU Extension (MSUE).
Funding for this mini-grant program is derived from the "Consumer Food
Safety Education Fund" established by the Michigan Food Law of 2000
and administered by the MDA. Three dollars from the sale of every food
license in Michigan is committed toward food safety education for Michigan
consumers. The aim of the mini-grant program is to improve the food
safety knowledge and practices of Michigan consumers. It also hopes
to forge strategic and appropriate partnerships with organizations that
share this commitment.
During previous years of this program, more than 23 grants (http://fooddomain.msu.edu/mdafund02-04_summary.asp)
have been awarded to organizations to educate consumers from 2002-2004.
For 2007, a Review Committee composed of six members (representing MDA,
the MDA Food Safety Education Advisory Committee, and participating
MSU units) reviewed 19 proposal applications.
Eleven mini-grants were approved for funding.
