For Kids

Organization Sponsored "For Kids" Sites

Kids Food Cyber Club

"Kids Only" contains a selection of interactive games that kids can play to test their food and nutrition knowledge.  "Rate Your Plate" lets kids evaluate the nutrition quality of food choices and "Your Ad Here" asks kids to design their own ad for a healthy food item.   Teachers can use "Nutrition Sleuths," an Internet scavenger hunt with a nutrition theme. "Hunger in Our Land" talks about the ongoing problem of hunger in the U.S.

Nutrition Explorations

Nutrition Explorations, by The National Dairy Council, brings Chef Combo's message of "making good food choices" to grade school students. Three lesson plans divided by age group present learning activities around a common theme.  All of the materials needed to implement these lessons are available on the site. The youngest age group can make Chef Combo puppets and print their own "tasting passport" as part of a lesson on trying new foods. A "teacher-to-teacher" page lets readers swap lesson ideas.  The "Kids' Zone" offers the same puzzles, recipe, and links that are included in the lesson plans. Several family activities are presented here, too, including tips for shopping and for cooking.

Nutrition Cafe

Pull up a chair to the Nutrition Cafe for some interactive nutrition fun! Three different activities are available for kids. In "Nutrition Sleuth" kids can solve seven different "cases" such as Fast Food Phil, Athletic Annie, and Cloudy Claudia. Three clues are all you get to figure out which nutrient is missing in the diets of each of these characters. "Grab A Grape" is a multiple choice Jeopardy game (complete with a Bonus Round!) with categories like Food Facts, Body Building, Bone Building, and Weight Control. At the "Have-A-Bite Cafe," viewers can build a meal by clicking on food choices, pressing the button, and previewing a nutrition breakdown of the meal, graphs included. "More Nutrition Info" includes a basic glossary of nutrients as well as links to the Interactive Food Guide Pyramid and the Dietary Guidelines.

Kids Health

The Kids Health web site helps kids learn about the things they need to do to stay physically and mentally healthy.  The site features educational articles and interactive activities about dealing with feelings, staying healthy, common illnesses and injuries, growing up and learning about helpful people, places and things.  A daily brain buzz tests kids' knowledge and the "Kids' Talk" section answers questions including: What's earwax? Why do I have a belly button? and What's a burp?

Healthy Choices for Kids Online

This site is a resource for teachers, day care providers and parents looking for online nutrition education materials. "The Good Food Climb" is a unit aimed at preschoolers; teachers can print out everything they need to present this unit, including a story book, coloring sheets, and lesson plans. The Healthy Choices for Kids online curriculum outlines four lessons aimed at older students. All of the needed lesson plans and activity sheets are available online; an accompanying poster can be ordered by mail. The "Healthy Choices for Kids" activity kit lets parents and children explore nutrition activities together.

Dairy Council of Wisconsin

The Dairy Council of Wisconsin posts nutrition educational activities that are targeted towards grade school students. The pages include a build-it-yourself food pyramid, a "foods to grow on" handout, a fact sheet that highlights healthful snack choices, and a handout that asks students to identify which foods are eaten as "lunch" in different parts of the world.

Nutrition on the Web - for teens!!

Nutrition on the Web - for teens is a site that provides information about exercise, nutrition, health myths, recipes and eating disorders.  It also includes interactive sections that help teens test their health knowledge, chat with other teens, learn about recommended daily allowances, and determine their Basal and Active Metabolic Rates.  A unique option on the web site is that teens can view text in English, German or Spanish.
