For Kids

Commercial Sponsored "For Kids" Sites

Kellogg's Nutrition Camp

Kellogg's Nutrition Camp provides children with nutrition information in a fun and interactive form. Upon arrival, campers can start their day at the "Fun Center." Favorites here include "Trivia Trail," where children exercise their minds with nutrition questions that range from an easy "Sunday stroll" to the more difficult "hardcore hike" level, and "Match'em," which challenges memory skills. Nutrition Camp kids can participate in two interactive stories that deal with the beneficial effects of eating a healthy breakfast.

Wegmans

Wegmans is a Rochester, NY-based supermarket chain.  The "Cooking Coach" gives the low-down on healthful cooking techniques such as roasting and grilling. Check out "Ingredients" for facts about fruits and vegetables--buying, storing, preparing. Nutrition facts for produce can be found here, too.  In the "W-Kids" section, kids can learn food safety rules from Megabyte the Shark, Riley the Rabbit, and Scout the Snake. Each of the five animals has its own set of pages featuring coloring pages, experiments with food, food-oriented kids books, jokes and games, recipes, and even an explanation of how microwave ovens work.

Tooned In School Menu

DJ Spot, a cartoon dog, shows kids how to make good food choices on the Tooned In School Menu web site.  The authors of this site print the monthly menus that some schools use to publicize their upcoming meal selections, so the focus here is on how eating well at school can help give kids the nutrition boost they need to pay attention and learn. A kids-eye view of the Food Guide Pyramid uses colorful graphics and simple text to get the "healthful eating is easy" message to readers. An "Activity Pyramid" posted here is a clever take on the food pyramid, listing activities like walking and climbing stairs in the "do everyday" pyramid base, with "cut down on" activities such as watching TV and playing computer games at the top.

Fresh Starts

The message, "antioxidant nutrients are an essential part of a healthful diet," is brought to you by vitamin manufacturer BASF. "Vitamins in the House" features "What's in the Kitchen?" a clever activity that identifies the important nutrients in some common foods. "Vitamins are Elementary" is targeted to teachers, offering five grade school lesson plans that talk about the role antioxidants play in keeping a body healthy. Several coloring pages and puzzles also appear in the kids' section.

Education Place

The Education Place web site contains a variety of nutrition lesson plans. Click on "Activity Search" and then on "Science" to bring up a list of selected activities. In "Eat Right" (grades 2-4), students build a food pyramid out of boxes decorated with food pictures. A Food Guide Pyramid poster is included, but teachers may want to print out the more colorful version available on the USDA site. "Incredible Edibles" (grades 2-4) includes some fun recipes that tie together cooking and nutrition lessons. The "Food Detectives" (grades 3-5) allows students to locate where in the world different foods are grown.

Dole 5-A-Day

Dole Food Company is a founding member of the National 5-A-Day for Better Health Program, a partnership between the National Cancer Institute and the Produce For Better Health Foundation.  This site provides information for children, educators and consumers.  Nutrition information about fruits and vegetables, 5-A-Day songs and a kids cook book are included.

Nutrition for Children

Nutrition for Kids is sponsored by 24 Carrot Press. They publish materials that take a positive, fun approach to the more serious issues that affect children today, including poor eating habits, obesity and inactivity.  The web site provides links to many of their teaching tools such as "How to Teach Nutrition to Kids" and "Crazy for Veggies."

Pork4Kids

Pork4Kids is sponsored by the National Pork Producers Council.  This site offers interactive games to teach children of various levels about pork.  Kids can plan their own shopping lists, create international meals and even climb the nutrition pyramid.

Got Milk?

The Got Milk? web site is a fun commercial web site that includes famous people's milk mustaches, lots of creative milk-based recipes and an interactive milk club.  It also offers contests, games and prizes; a downloadable milk mustache screen saver and an "All About Milk" section, which talks about what is milk, the history of milk and the different types of milk.

PearBear Healthy Kids

A kind, child-friendly, pear-loving character, PearBear roams the forests and fields with his friends, the other animals that share them. Their adventures develop through humorous stories with enough sophistication that even adults will enjoy reading them.  PearBear's favorite food is, of course, pears. But he delivers, through posters and stories, other messages by example, such as: wash fruits and vegetables before eating them, sharing, care for others, don't litter and don't quarrel with your friends.

Vita-School

This site posts vitamin-themed lesson plans for grades K through 8. All plans were written by a teacher and modified to accommodate the interest levels of average, advanced, and special needs students. Primary lessons cover basic information on why people need vitamins and what foods are good sources of vitamins. Lessons targeted to older students go into greater detail, discussing the role vitamins play in the prevention of disease.
