About the Food Domain: Manufacturers

Manufacturers
Manufacturers use processed food to create finished edible products. For instance, a food manufacturer making canned vegetable soup purchases tomatoes, celery, carrots, peas, corn and beans that were already prepped for cooking by food processors. If noodles are added to the soup, the food manufacturer buys preprocessed foods, such as flour and pasteurized eggs, to make the pasta or purchases pre-made pasta from another food manufacturer. Once the soup is made and canned, it is sold to wholesalers and retailers who then sell the soup or it is sold to other manufacturers who use the soup to make additional manufactured products.

Food manufacturers usually provide foods that are more convenient to eat. Frozen dinners, canned soups, and boxed pasta dishes are all products that can be quickly prepared and eaten. They also produce foods that consumers cannot easily make in their homes due to complicated preparation methods or rare ingredients.
